Baby found in alley in Omaha with umbilical cord still attached

OMAHA, Neb. (KLKN) — Around 8 a.m., officers with Omaha Police Department (OPD) responded to a fire station for a child welfare check.

Omaha Fire Department reported an infant had been found in an alley and was brought to the fire station.

The infant girl had been wrapped in a clean, dry towel and reportedly looked healthy. The umbilical cord was still attached to the newborn.

Officials say they are currently looking for the mother of the baby to make sure she is okay. According to the Nebraska Safe Haven law, any baby under the age of 90 days can be surrendered at a designated location with no legal repercussions.

Captain Bill Young said in his 18 years of working in law enforcement he has never seen a situation like this.
