Poll workers needed ahead of November election

LINCOLN, Neb. (KLKN) – Cities like Crete and the city of Friend are actively searching for volunteer poll workers right now.

Saline County posting on Facebook a request for those willing to help at the polls.

Poll workers help with opening and closing the polls, checking voters in and/or tallying up the votes.

Gary Binder is an advocate for volunteering on election day and has been signing up for nearly thirty years now.

He acknowledged the deficit for volunteers during an interview with Channel 8 on Thursday.

“There generally is a scramble every election to find enough people,” said Binder.

He said there are always criteria posted on the county website, but a lot of time you just have to show up.

“You do have to be able to set your political passion aside for the time that the polls are open,” said Binder.

“We are neutral. We work according to the laws of the state of Nebraska, but other than that, it’s a fun job, you get a good feeling, and it could really be a lot of fun,” he said.

As for volunteer training, he says that in the past you were required to take an in-person class but now, you can do it online.
