‘I gave my all to this sport’: Husker football player Mac Markway retires after multiple knee injuries

LINCOLN, Neb. (KLKN) — Mac Markway, Nebraska football tight end, announced today his decision to retire from the sport.

In a social media post, Markway gave his thanks to his coaches and teammates.

“I gave my all to this sport that I love and is in my blood and to all my teammates and coaches I love you guys a ton, because of how much you guys helped me through all my hardships,” Markway wrote.

Markway started his college football career with LSU, transferring to Nebraska after his freshman season. This season would be his senior year.

Markway suffered many knee injuries, with his last one occurring in the 2025 season.

In a press conference in July of 2025, Nebraska Head Coach Matt Rhule said Markway was an unbelievable human.

“Heartbreaking news,” Rhule said when announcing Markway’s last injury. “He’s an unbelievable human, I feel terrible for him. I was really excited for what I knew he was about to do, but I know the human he is and I’m excited for what he does next.”

Markway says he will continue to be at the facility and games assisting the coaches and players.
