Second District Congressional candidates debate over ICE

LINCOLN, Neb. (KLKN) — Two candidates in the Second District Congressional race faced off in a debate speaking about multiple issues including Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE).

The event was hosted by Nebraska Public Media.

Republican Brinker Harding and Democrat Denise Powell spoke about local law enforcement’s role when working with ICE.

Powell said she believes a resolution can be made.

“There are a lot of communities who don’t feel safe right now because of the way ICE has been operating,” Powell said. “But I think that we can find a happy medium.”

Harding said federal agents should be equipped with necessary equipment.

“I think any federal agent, who caries a badge, should also have a body cam,” Harding said. “It not only protects the person wearing the badge but also it protects the people that they have in encounters with.”
