Council decides on axe-throwing venues getting liquor licenses

Lincolnites will soon have the option of axe throwing.
Two venues — one called Tomahawks and the other called Craft Axe Throwing — are coming to the capital city.
“We’d love to bring something new to the Lincoln community,” said Craft Axe Throwing co-owner Travis Cornelius. “We’re always looking for the next big thing that’s popping up and axe throwing seems to be that next big thing.”
Both would like to serve beer at their venues. So on Monday, they went before the Lincoln City Council seeking liquor licenses.
The applicants faced questions concerning mixing alcohol with weapons. Both said they will have policies in place to prevent anyone intoxicated from throwing axes.
“We give power to every one of our staff,” Cornelius said. “They can ask that participant to not participate in the axe throwing or ask them to leave of facility at time if there’s any question…on intoxication.”
Tomahawks said they would use breathalyzers.
“Each one of our axe–throwing coaches will have one of these on hand. So basically, if there’s any area of concern…they could basically just turn this on, you blow into it for about 10 seconds.”
The council voted 5–0 to approve Craft Axe Throwing for a liquor license.
But Tomahawks fell short of the four votes needed to get theirs, with council members showing concerns over the applicants’ criminal violations over the years.
“It sure looks to me like…there’s and issue there that needs to be resolved,” said Councilman Roy Christensen. “And the correct place for the resolution is at the Nebraska Liquor Commission.”
Tomahawks will have to go back before the council next week.
Regardless of whether or not the council approves, both businesses must go to the Liquor Control Commission.
Craft Axe Throwing said even if they aren’t given a liquor license, they aim to have their grand opening around New Year’s.
