UNL will close Wednesday in recognition of national day of mourning

The University of Nebraska-Lincoln will close Wednesday, December 5, in recognition of the passing of President George H.W. Bush.

Chancellor Ronnie Green announced the decision in a campus-wide email Monday.

It comes after President Donald Trump’s executive order declaring Wednesday a national day of mourning, during which all federal offices will be closed.

Nebraska Gov. Pete Ricketts also announced state government agencies will close.

All classes for Wednesday have been canceled.

This is the final scheduled week of classes, and Green said he’s aware of the potential scheduling conflicts that may arise as a result of the decision.

“I recognize this is the final scheduled week of classes as we work to complete this semester,” Green said. “I am confident that faculty will work directly with their students to ensure they are able to successfully complete their work for the term.”

Green recommended anyone with questions about university activities call to learn about alternate scheduling.

Green said in a news release the day will be a paid holiday for all non-essential university employees.

He said designated essential employees should continue to report, and will be compensated as established by campus payroll policies and procedures.
