Husker player wears concussion preventing collar developed by former UNL trainer

Nebraska safety Antonio Reed put on a tremendous performance during the Huskers 9-6 victory over Michigan State on Saturday.
The senior also put on a piece of gear that a former UNL athletic trainer hopes will transform the game and make it safer.
Jeff Chambers formed the company Guardian Athletics, which developed a specialty collar for football players that he hopes will help prevent head and neck injuries.
It’s called the Kato Collar, and it’s installed inside a player’s shoulder pads.
Chambers, who worked as athletic trainer at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln from 1979-83, says it can reduce the speed of a player’s head after impact by 30%.
Chambers says its been picked up by high school teams across the country, as well as dozens of Power 5 Conference college teams and even five NFL teams.
So far, Reed is the only Husker player to wear a Kato Collar.
