Man in custody after deadly Hebron shooting

HEBRON, Neb. — Nebraska State Patrol investigators arrested one man after a shooting in Hebron that left one person dead and one person in critical condition on Saturday.
NSP investigators said the series of events began with a disturbance between multiple people at around 1:30 a.m. on Saturday at a residence at 200 North Elm Street in Davenport. Court documents say Michael Lewis, 21, of Hebron had brandished a firearm and assaulted another person.
That incident prompted another at approximately 3:20 a.m. at a residence at 625 Jefferson Avenue in Hebron.
During the second incident, court documents say Lewis was awakened at his home by a banging on his front door. Lewis said he saw a man outside who he identified as Chance Gerdes. Lewis said they argued at the door, and then he shut and locked it.
Lewis then reportedly retrieved a 9 mm handgun from his bedroom and heard a banging on another door to the home. Court documents say Lewis opened the door and saw Remington Elting, 28, of Davenport. Lewis said they got into a scuffle where he shot Remington.
Lewis said Reuben Elting, 33, of Davenport then came toward them from around a corner, and he was unsure if he was coming to check on his brother or to attack Lewis. Lewis then said he shot Reuben from about 10-15 feet away.
Remington was transported to the hospital and was later pronounced dead. Reuben was flown to Bryan Medical Center at Bryan West Campus in Lincoln in critical condition.
After investigation by the Nebraska State Patrol and the Thayer County Sheriff’s Office, Lewis was arrested for first degree assault and use of a deadly weapon to commit a felony. Additional charges could be added pending further investigation.
Lewis appeared in Thayer County Court for a hearing Monday at 1:30 p.m. A judge set his bond at 10 percent of $250,000.
The investigation is ongoing.
