Pound Hall is back on the UNL campus

The implosion of Cather-Pound dormitories happened December of last year.

The 13 story towers opened in 1963. It was Nebraska’s oldest high-rise residence hall complex.

Almost a year later, and both Cather and Pound have new locations on campus.

The dining complex was named after Willa Cather. Louise Pound is officially the new name to the old College of Business Administration.

"It’s just great I think for our students and our faculty and our alums to have the recognition of someone prominent like Louise Pound for this great big building to be named after her," said NU chancellor, Ronnie Green.

Pound was a distinguished scholar, athlete, musician and advocate for women’s sports.

Before teaching in the NU English department for 48 years, she was rated the top tennis player in the country and was the first woman in NU history to receive a men’s varsity letter.

Pound helped NU become the first university in the nation to allow women cheerleaders.

The renaming of the building happened just in time for another record year of enrolled students beginning classes.

"As they go by this grand old building right in the middle of our campus, we’ll have an opportunity for them to bring significance back to Louise Pound who we are very proud of," said Green.

The new Pound location will be home to diverse areas of study, most units will be from the College of Arts and Sciences.
