LPD: Man rides in bed of truck, arrested with knives

LPD reported seeing a man riding in the bed of a pickup truck illegally on Tuesday

LINCOLN, Neb. (KLKN)- Around 9 p.m. on June 1, a Lincoln police officer reported seeing a man riding in the bed of a black ’95 Chevy pickup truck–which is illegal.

The officer said he saw the truck park in a lot on 27th and “O” streets and contacted the man who immediately threw down the backpack he was wearing and took off running away from the officer.

The officer reported that despite his calls to tell the man to stop running away, the man continued and the officer eventually caught up with him. Officers reported identifying the man as 26-year-old Richard Strickland.

A little bit later, officers say he resisted them and after a struggle was taken into custody. When officers looked in Strickland’s backpack, they reported finding two six-inch-long fixed blade knives. LPD says he has a previous felony conviction prohibiting him from possessing a knife.

The driver of the pickup truck, 52-year-old Chad Svoboda, reportedly was also contacted and found to have an outstanding warrant. Officers reported taking Svoboda into custody and then finding a pipe that had residue in it that tested positive for methamphetamine.

Strickland was arrested for possession of controlled substance, possession of a deadly weapon by a prohibited person, felony arrest due to t it being a subsequent offense, obstructing a police officer, carrying a concealed weapon, and riding on the outside of a motor vehicle.

Svoboda was arrested for his warrant and possession of a controlled substance.
