Brittany Foster grew up in Overland Park, KS where she developed a love for weather in middle school. “Before then, I was always taking pictures of the sky, playing in the snow, and watching thunderstorms from my bedroom window, but I never thought I would go into the science.” Brittany continues, “Everything changed in my seventh-grade science class when we started our weather unit. It was like a switch was flipped in my head and I found what made me happy.”
Brittany went to the University of Kansas and graduated with a bachelor’s degree in Atmospheric Science/Meteorology and a minor in Journalism. She was able to get a lot of hands-on experience while at KU. “I started getting experience in front of a green screen my first year in college at one of our local TV stations on campus”, she remembers. “By my sophomore year, I jumped up to the advanced station on campus and did the weather until my Junior year, when I eventually had to stop because I was offered a job as the weekend weathercaster at News-Press NOW in St. Joseph, MO. I stayed at News-Press until I graduated from college and then eventually moved to Lincoln and joined the Storm Alert Team at Channel 8 KLKN-TV. “My job is to keep the public informed and safe from a field of science that can rapidly change within seconds. While fascinating and beautiful, the weather can turn dangerous quickly so it’s important that we continue to grow the field of meteorology and continue research.”
Brittany loves to talk about the forecast and break down the science. She says she’s fortunate to be able to talk about her passion on a daily basis at work. In her spare time, she enjoys riding her bike and taking her pet Chiweenie, Mia, for walks. She likes to watch movies and binge the latest TV shows.
