LINCOLN, Neb. (KLKN) — Nebraska volleyball players were ready to go Friday night. Some had even dressed into their uniforms for the match.

But at 4:00 p.m., John Cook entered the locker room and told the team the match was canceled due to a positive COVID-19 test within the Northwestern program.

“They were in disbelief,” Cook said. “They thought we were playing a joke on them.”

Well, such is the times of playing in a pandemic. Cook said he gave the Huskers the night off on Friday and then they scrimmaged on Saturday in front of the players’ families.

For Cook, this was a worst-case scenario. Northwestern had already arrived on campus and the positive test came during testing the morning of the match.

“Every coach is worried about having an outbreak,” Cook said.

He also referenced Fred Hoiberg and Nebraska basketball, saying he texted Hoiberg throughout his team’s three-week layoff due to a full fledged COVID-19 outbreak.

Nebraska is scheduled to host Maryland on Friday and Saturday this weekend at the Devaney Center.
