Creighton basketball coach suspended for insensitive comments
Creighton men's basketball coach Greg McDermott has been suspended from all team activities, the University announced late Thursday night.
LINCOLN, Neb. (KLKN) — Creighton men’s basketball coach Greg McDermott has been suspended from all team activities, the University announced late Thursday night.
McDermott is being heavily criticized for insensitive comments he made during a postgame speech after a loss on Feb. 27.
“Guys, we got to stick together. We need both feet in. I need everyone to stay on the plantation. I can’t have anybody leave the plantation,” he said that day.
McDermott addressed the comments in a statement on Tuesday.
“I immediately recognized my egregious mistake and quickly addressed my use of such insensitive words with the team,” he said in a statement. “I have never used that analogy and it is not indicative of who I am as a person or as a coach. I am deeply sorry. I have apologized to our student-athletes and to our staff, as well as to President Hendrickson and Director of Athletics Bruce Rasmussen.”
Per a news release, McDermott will miss Saturday’s home finale against Butler and could be subject to further discipline.
