Father of Husker defensive coordinator dies in car crash

The father of Husker defensive coordinator Erik Chinander was killed in a car crash Thursday afternoon, according to the Iowa State Patrol (ISP). Gene Chinander was 69 years old.

LINCOLN, Neb (KLKN) — UPDATE: Defensive coordinator Erik Chinander will travel with the team to Minnesota, according to an athletic department spokesperson.

ALLISON, Iowa (KLKN) — The father of Husker defensive coordinator Erik Chinander was killed in a car crash Thursday afternoon, according to the Iowa State Patrol (ISP). Gene Chinander was 69 years old.

According to an ISP crash report, Gene was driving southbound on on Highway 14 near Allison, Iowa, when he failed to stop at the intersection of Highway 3 and Highway 14. His truck then left the road and crashed into a parked semi trailer in a nearby parking lot.

Gene was pronounced dead at the scene.

Erik Chinander has been on the Huskers coaching staff since Scott Frost was hired in 2018. Nebraska travels to Minnesota on Friday for a Saturday morning kickoff against the Golden Gophers.

There’s no word yet if Chinander will travel with the team to Minneapolis.
