LINCOLN, Neb. (KLKN) – A former Nebraska forward has taken his talents Down Under after signing a deal with an Australian team in the National Basketball League.

Lat Mayen penned a two-year deal with the Cairns Taipans on Wednesday.

Mayen was signed to the team after his debut with the semi-pro Cairns Marlins, where he averaged 19.8 points and 7 rebounds per game.

The 6-foot-9 South Sudan native spent two seasons with the Huskers before signing a contract with the Marlins.

During the 2021-22 season, he played 31 games and averaged 5.9 points and 3.8 rebounds per game for Nebraska.

Mayen was one of two players to start all 27 games for the Huskers in the 2020-21 season.  He led the team with 48 three-pointers and was fourth in scoring.

Last week, freshman Nebraska standout Bryce McGowens was selected in the second round of the NBA Draft.  He was picked by the Minnesota Timberwolves and immediately traded to the Charlotte Hornets.

Despite losing some talented players, Husker basketball coach Fred Hoiberg said he is “optimistic” for the upcoming season at a press conference on Monday.
