LINCOLN, Neb. (KLKN) – Gov. Jim Pillen has declared February to be Nebraska Mentoring Month.

Pillen was joined by lawmakers, legendary Husker coach Tom Osborne and mentoring program representatives at the State Capitol on Monday.

During the event, Pillen announced an annual $5 million competitive grant to promote mentorships in Nebraska schools.

That funding has yet to be approved by the Legislature.

Pillen also said the state would be relaunching a program that allows workers to modify their schedules so they can volunteer as mentors.

“We know the hope that mentoring gives to kids,” Pillen said in a press release. “There is nothing as rewarding as being a mentor to a young person.”
