Huskers’ Deontai Williams “fired up” to be back on the field

The senior safety broke his collar bone during the season opener of 2019 against South Alabama, missing the rest of the year.

LINCOLN — Deontai Williams had a wry smile sitting in front of a camera while addressing media members over Zoom on Tuesday.

“I’m fired up,” he said. “I’m ready to hit.”

It’s been a long time since Williams has been able to do that.

The senior safety broke his collar bone during the season opener of 2019 against South Alabama, missing the rest of the year. Now, after an extended offseason because of the coronavirus pandemic and a postponed season, Williams is finally getting his opportunity to lead the Nebraska defense.

“I feel like I still have a lot to prove,” Williams said.

Williams had two interceptions and two forced fumbles during his sophomore season.
