Extreme winds cause heating issues at Cranston Street Armory

CRANSTON, R.I. (WLNE) — Extreme winds caused several windows to break at the Cranston Street Armory, resulting in decreased temperatures in the warming center.
Saturday afternoon, a spokesperson for Gov. Dan McKee said that temperatures dropped in the main drill hall after this incident. Luckily, the Armory was pre-heated in preparation for the anticipated below-zero temperatures.
Crews are working to fix the windows and are bringing in temporary heaters. They’re also working with the Fire Marshal to enable overnight use in other areas of the Armory that weren’t impacted.
Additionally, couples that were already prioritized through the Coordinated Entry System will be allowed to move to the new shelter on Hartford Avenue.
McKee deployed his incoming Housing Secretary, Department of Administration Director, Emergency Management Director and the National Guard to further assess the situation.
