New Bedford awarded federal homeless assistance funds
NEW BEDFORD, Mass. (WLNE) — Mayor Jon Mitchell said Tuesday that the city of New Bedford was awarded more than $2 million in homeless assistance funding.
The grant comes as a part of a competitive grant process under Housing Urban Development’s Continuum of Care Program.
Mitchell defined the Continuum of Care Program as their way to strategize, organize and deliver housing services to meet people’s specific needs who are in a housing crisis.
He said the city’s funds were awarded through a competitive national application process with applications submitted from the city’s Office of Housing and Community Development.
“Every day the city and the HSPN work without fanfare to address the complex issue of homelessness,” Mitchell said. “This new funding will enable that work to continue and will strengthen our efforts to stabilize the lives most vulnerable in our city.”
Authorities said the federal funding will support eight local programs, along with data and strategic planning efforts.
The agencies and programs set to receive funding are as follows:
- Family Preservation Program (SEMCOA) — $321,737
- Welcome Home (Steppingstone) — $218, 836
- Portico (Catholic Social Services) — $725,211
- Step Up (Positive Action Against Chemical Addiction) — $316,917
- Prism (Catholic Social Services) — $132,155
- Welcome Home Expansion (Steppingstone) — $89,978
- Family Preservation Program Expansion (SEMCOA) — $89,971
- The Call Coordinated Entry (Catholic Social Services) — $50,000
- Homeless Management Information System — $74, 524
- CoC Planning Project — $73,255
