Lincoln man reunites missing cat with owners after months apart
LINCOLN, Neb. (KLKN) – When Dan Zichek and his family found a stray cat outside their Lincoln home earlier this month, they didn’t think much of it.
That’s until Zichek found a microchip in her back and the race to find the cat’s owners began.
“It just seemed like the right thing to do,” he said.
Zichek said the skinny kitty was searching for food and warmth. And being a multiple-cat owner himself, he knew exactly what to do.
“Boy she was hungry,” he said. “She ate a ton.”
Meanwhile, Rebekah Reighard and her boyfriend, Tony Patterson, were about to give up hope of ever finding their cat, Cardi, again.
She went missing four months earlier and Reighard expected the worst.
“We had home flyers,” she said. “I posted all over Facebook and on all the lost pet sites.”
Luckily, Zichek was able to get close enough to his stray to notice the microchip. After some coaxing, he was able to get her inside a carrier to take her to a local feline hospital.
“She did not like it at all,” he said. “My goodness, her voice was so loud.”
Once scanned, the cat’s microchip led him to Reighard. And after a couple missed calls, he decided to take matters in his own hands and knock on her front door.
“Rebekah comes to the door, and she has this look in her face, like, ‘Who the heck are you?’ ” Zichek said.
“I obviously wasn’t expecting that since I was in my robe,” Rebekah joked.
Zichek said, “All I said was, ‘I have Cardi.’ Her eyes got huge.”
Said Reighard, “Well I started crying, then he started crying, which I think made me start crying more.”
Zichek said “it was such a grand reunion” that “did my heart good.”
Cardi is now well fed, and back to maintaining her dominance in Reighard and Patterson’s home.
That means she’s back to roaming the neighborhood with a brand-new GPS chip, so her owners can keep her close.
“We’re just super thankful for Dan and his wife,” Reighard said.
As for Zichek, he’s just glad he was able to bring others some joy.
