FOLLOW UP: Armed robbery suspect in custody

Authorities are investigating a reported armed robbery at a Lincoln gas station. 

LINCOLN, Neb. (KLKN) – An armed robber has been identified after a month of searching.

The victim, a Kwik Shop employee, recognized 20-year-old Earl Hayes on the news when he was arrested for an unrelated robbery.

After robbing a Kwik Shop, 2710 W. St., on Oct. 10th, Hayes returned to the convenience store a week later as a patron. The victim was working at the time and noted Hayes kept asking questions about the armed robbery.

Later, the victim saw Hayes on the news. He had been arrested for robbing a Prairie Lake Mobile at gunpoint in late October.

The victim contacted the police to indicate that Hayes was also their assailant.

Hayes, who was currently in jail, is facing additional robbery charges.

The incident happened around 2:30 Saturday morning on Oct. 10.

According to the store clerk, the suspect brought a few items to the counter before pulling out a gun and demanding Newport cigarettes, Black and Mild cigars, 2 bottles of Hennessey and about $150 in cash.

Lincoln police officers responded around 3 a.m. Saturday morning to the Kwik Shop at 2710 W. St. on a hold up alarm.

The clerk told officers a man came into the store with a gun and demanded money, alcohol and cigarettes.

The man, who has not been identified, took off running from the store.
