Man killed in ATV rollover near Springfield

SPRINGFIELD, Neb. (KLKN) — The Sarpy County Sheriff’s Office confirmed that a 71-year-old man has died in an ATV rollover accident near rural Springfield.

Officials said it happened late Thursday night, around 9:10 p.m. Emergency crews were called to the accident and said 71-year-old Edward L. Smith was found not breathing. CPR was performed upon arrival but after several life-saving attempts, he passed away.

“Our deepest sympathy and thoughts of comfort are with the family, friends, and loved ones of Mr. Edward Smith,” the Sarpy County Sheriff’s Office said in a statement.

The preliminary investigation determined Smith was riding an ATV along a fence line on private property near 120th Street, south of Platteview Rd. The ATV then rolled, pinning Smith. He was located by friends and family members. He was the only person involved in the crash.

This case is in the early stages of investigations with no further details at this time.
