LINCOLN, Neb. (KLKN) — Adrian Martinez didn’t hold back when he was asked about the quarterback competition between himself and Luke McCaffrey.

“The best quarterback is going to play. Period,” Martinez said. “Luke is pushing me.”

Martinez and McCaffrey appear to be as close to neck-and-neck for Nebraska’s starting quarterback role as expected. However, offensive coordinator Matt Lubick said last week that if the season started today, Martinez would be QB No. 1.

Still, Martinez is focused on making his team better and he feels he’s as healthy a

McCaffrey is taking everything one day at a time as well. The redshirt freshman played in four games last year and is learning a lot from Martinez.

“I’m so thankful to have a guy like him, a leader like him,” McCaffrey said.

Quarterbacks coach Mario Verduzco didn’t give anything away when asked about both guys on Thursday.

“Feel good about Adrian and Luke both,” Verduzco said. “They are very simliar in a lot of ways in terms of their skill set.”

Verduzco did say the final decision on the quarterback starter would come from head coach Scott Frost. But he did say to expect both players to have significant roles this season.
