LINCOLN, Neb. (KLKN) — Nebraska Attorney General Mike Hilgers is taking aim at Mexican drug cartels.

Hilgers has joined 21 other attorneys general calling on President Joe Biden and Secretary of State Antony Blinken to take action on the cartels.

In their letter, they urge the adminstration to designate Mexican drug cartels as foreign terrorist organizations under federal law.

The attorneys general say that would give the government more flexibility in handling the opioid and immigration crises.

The cartels are accused of assassinations, killing Americans at the border and battling the Mexican government.

Under the new designation, the United States could freeze cartel assets, turn cartel members away at the border and issue harder punishments for cartel conspirators.

The letter to Biden and Blinken can be read on the state’s website.
