Nebraska baseball opens series up with win over Illinois State

LINCOLN, Neb. (KLKN) – Nebraska baseball stays undefeated at home after a win against Illinois State on Friday.

The Huskers, who are coming off a sweep of Northern Colorado, beat the Redbirds 8-3 on a chilly day at Haymarket Park.

Emmett Olson pitched six innings for the Huskers, striking out eight batters and giving up two runs.

Shay Schanaman closed the game out, throwing five strikeouts and allowing one run.

Shortstop Brice Matthews, second baseman Max Anderson and center fielder Casey Burnham each had two runs batted in.

Nebraska has now won eight of its last nine games.

One of those wins was against No. 7 Vanderbilt, which was the Huskers’ first victory over a top-10 team since 2019.

The Huskers will continue their series against Illinois State on Saturday at 4:05 p.m.
