Nebraska For Us provides $10,000 after Community BBQ for Food Security
OMAHA, Neb. (KLKN) — Nebraska For Us welcomed Families Over Billionaires during the Community BBQ for Food Security on Sunday, July 12. Nebraska For Us hosted the event while providing $10,000 to Food Bank for the Heartland.
According to their website, Nebraska For Us defends the good life for hard-working Nebraskans.
Along with free lunch, visitors to the event heard from speakers. The speakers discussed the Republican Tax Law and the effects of it. The effects they highlighted were residents access to food here in Nebraska. Along with that, the advocacy group discussed the impacts of SNAP and Medicaid cuts.
Kristen Crowell, the executive director of Families Over Billionaires, was one of the speakers.
“We are here to stand in solidarity of nearly 80,000 members of Nebraska, predominately children, veterans and seniors who have their food assistance at risk,” said Crowell. “They are already losing it as we speak. We stand in solidarity with the 78,000 Nebraskans who stand to lose healthcare coverage. We know that those things, those losses of food and healthcare are enormously detrimental to a community.”
Food Bank for the Heartland said the donation will help stock local pantries as demands rise while sharing the hope that this event encourages important conversations.
“The issue of hunger in our area is far bigger than what just the Food Bank can address on its own, but this grant will allow us to get closer to that aim,” said Tim Williams, Director of Government Affairs and Advocacy at Food Bank for the Heartland. “Our community is a generous one that steps up, even when times are as tough as they are right now.”
