LINCOLN, Neb. (KLKN) — Governor Jim Pillen on Monday issued a proclamation, putting the Nebraska National Guard on active-duty status for wildfire response.

The proclamation aims to ensure that the National Guard’s resources are ready and available to respond to wildfires, should they be needed.

According to Pillen’s office, high winds, low humidity, and dry conditions continue to be a concern and could pose a risk to Nebraskans and damage public and private property.

Under the proclamation, aviation assets, support equipment, and personnel have been placed on active duty.

“Protecting the citizens of Nebraska is my number one priority,” Pillen said in a press release. “We are ensuring that resources are ready to combat fires and safeguard lives and property. I have full confidence in Adjutant General Strong to lead our state’s disaster response with efficiency and effectiveness.”

Pillen sent the National Guard to central and western Nebraska in mid-March to assist with the wildfires.

The National Guard has worked with the Iowa National Guard, local firefighters and volunteers from other states over the past several weeks to help bring the wildfires under control.
