Proposal foes say will whitewash history in Nebraska schools sparks hundreds of comments

The vast majority are against what's been labeled an anti-critical race theory bill

LINCOLN, Neb. (KLKN) — Nebraska lawmakers have received hundreds of comments about LB 1077, which opponents claim will whitewash American history by prohibiting teachings on slavery.

The local nonprofit Stand for Schools tweeted there were 342 comments against the bill, while only 68 supported it.

The opposition includes students, teachers and university faculty-members from all across the state who’ve signed what they’re calling a declaration against censorship.

Critics say not only would the bill prevent educators from accurately teaching about our country’s dark history, but it’s also anti-LGBTQ+ as it prohibits certain discussions about sex in addition to race.
