LINCOLN, Neb. (KLKN) — The Nebraska and Oklahoma football game scheduled for Sept. 18 may not be played, according to multiple reports.

Brett McMurphy of Stadium first reported the news, tweeting that Nebraska was “trying to get out” of the game for this season.

Oklahoma athletic director Joe Castiglione responded to the report.

“We full intend and expect to play the game as it is scheduled,” he said in a statement.

This game was originally scheduled to celebrated the 50th anniversary of the “Game of the Century” when No. 1 Nebraska defeated No. 2 Oklahoma, 35-31, in 1971.

The two schools are scheduled to play one game in Norman, Okla. this season and then another in Lincoln during the 2022 season.

The Nebraska athletic department has not responded to a request for comment.
