Storm potential Friday, April 23rd
OVERALL: Showers and storms are possible Thursday, then again over the weekend. Temperatures will get much cooler as we head into the weekend.
TEMPERATURES: Most of the day on Thursday will be dry and mild. Temperatures will be much cooler to the west, near 80 for central and eastern Nebraska. But a cold front is lurking.
RISK LEVEL: There is a level 1 “Marginal Risk” for severe weather in the green shaded area and a level 2 “Slight Risk” for severe weather in the yellow shaded area.
THREATS: Isolated tornadoes, large hail, and damaging wind. If a tornado can form, it would likely be a quick, spin up tornado that doesn’t last very long, but there’s an outside chance that a stronger tornado may for up to EF-2 in strength.
Hail is possible as well, with most areas seeing the potential for hail around 1″ in diameter in size. The areas in yellow with the black hashtags may see occasional hail up to the size of golf balls.
Damaging wind will also be a concern, with wind gusts in excess of 60 mph possible.
TIMING: Storms will start up along a line in the green shaded area by mid afternoon Thursday, then strengthen as they quickly move east into the yellow shaded area by late Thursday afternoon.
THINGS TO KEEP IN MIND: Not everyone will see severe storms and not everyone will see rain, but these shaded areas have to the potential for severe weather.
More storm chances are in the forecast over the weekend and then on and off next week. High temperatures will be in the 60s all the way through next week.
