United States Capitol Police Officer involved in riots dies, death toll now at 5.
LINCOLN, Neb. (KLKN)- A US Capitol police officer has died from injuries while responding to the riots at the Capitol building Wednesday.
Officer Sicknick was responding to the riots and was injured while physically engaging with protesters. He returned to his division office and collapsed. He was taken to a local hospital where he later died.
Officer Brian D. Sicknick passed away at 9:30 ET on Thursday evening. Officer Sicknick joined the USCP in July 2008 and most recently served in the Department’s First Responders Unit.
There were four other deaths prior to this. Among those who died was Ashli Babbitt, who was shot by Capitol Police.

Senator Ben Sasse issued a statement following Sicknick’s death:
“This is gut-wrenching news. None of this should have happened. Melissa and I are praying for Officer Sicknick’s family and for the families of the four others who died. Our country aches for the families who mourn. Lord, have mercy,” Sasse said.
