Defense officials ramp up the maximum number of National Guardsmen to assist the inauguration.
WASHINGTON (ABC) — The National Guard is now authorized to have up to 20,000 Guardsmen in D.C. for the 59th Presidential Inauguration, an official with the Department of Defense tells ABC News.
This is a sizable increase from the 15,000 personal limit previously approved. The majority of the National Guardsmen are expected to arrive in D.C. by this weekend.
The defense official says the increase was approved following numerous requests from federal agencies, asking for more security. The official reports many states, including Nebraska, have been stepping up to meet this request.
