2022 State Tournament: Championship Friday
Lincoln Lutheran and Lincoln Southwest played their hearts out, battling until the final buzzer, but came up just short in their respective state title games.
LINCOLN, Neb. (KLKN) – Lincoln Lutheran and Lincoln Southwest played their hearts out, battling until the final buzzer, but came up just short in their respective state basketball title games.
GIRLS STATE CHAMPIONS:
Class A – Fremont 37, Lincoln Southwest 32
Lincoln Southwest took a six-point lead with 6:42 remaining in the fourth quarter but Fremont battled back, taking the lead for good on a McKenna Murphy three-pointer. Gatorade Player of the Year and Iowa commit Taylor McCabe led all scorers with 16 points.
Class C1 – North Bend Central 35, Lincoln Lutheran 31 (OT)
Lincoln Lutheran held a lead late into the fourth quarter before North Bend Central knocked down a free throw to tie the game at 31 to force overtime. Tigers sophomore forward Josie Cleveringa hit the go-ahead three pointer to take the lead in the extra period. The Warriors did not score in overtime as North Bend Central held on to win their third straight C1 title.
Class D2 – Falls City Sacred Heart 43, Humphrey St. Francis 33
BOYS STATE CHAMPIONS:
Class B – Roncalli Catholic 52, Skutt Catholic 37
Quincy Evans and Jacob Orr combined to score 28 points, helping the Crimson Tide defeat the SkyHawks and win their second state title (1996).
Class C2 – Humphrey/Lindsay Holy Family 43, Grand Island Central Catholic 42 (OT)
The Crusaders had a chance to win the game in regulation, but Isaac Herbek missed two free throws, forcing overtime. With five seconds remaining in the game, GICC’s Marcus Lowry was called for a tripping foul, sending the Bulldogs Jason Sjuts to the free throw line. Sjuts knocked down his first free throw to take the lead. The Crusaders completed a full court pass with two seconds to go, giving Gil Jengmer a chance to win the game, but his shot was off the mark. After winning the D1 championships in both 2019 and 2021, Humphrey/Lindsay Holy Family wins their first C2 championship after moving up a class this year.
Class D1 – North Platte St. Patrick’s 65, Loomis 37
The Irish win their first championship since the Coolidge administration. Brecken Erickson finished with 19 points and 13 rebounds while Jack Heiss had 14 points, 7 rebounds and 7 assists.
