Lincoln Southeast hires Cheyenne Covarrubias as new boys’ head soccer coach

LINCOLN, Neb. (KLKN) — Lincoln Southeast Athletic Director Kara Graham announced the hiring of Cheyenne Covarrubias as the school’s new boys’ head soccer coach on Thursday.
“Southeast is proud to announce the addition of Cheyenne Covarrubias as the next boys soccer coach,” Graham said in a press release. “Cheyenne has a strong background in the sport of soccer, with coaching experience at both the club and high school levels. Cheyenne builds positive relationships with student-athletes, focusing on skills and character traits that will apply to life outside of high school sports.”
Cobarrubias said he is looking forward to leading the Knights.
“I am excited to join the Lincoln Southeast family and feel honored to have the opportunity to lead the boys soccer team into the future,” Covarrubias said.
He graduated from Grand Island Senior High in 2013 and was a key contributor to the soccer program, according to Graham.
The Islanders qualified for the state tournament in his sophomore, junior and senior seasons.
Covarrubias started his LPS coaching career in 2023 at Standing Bear High School, serving as an assistant boys varsity soccer coach and head junior varsity coach.
Covarrubias will take the helm of a Southeast program that has qualified for the state tournament 14 times. The Knights have made three state appearances in the past four seasons.
“As we look ahead to next year, it is crucial to maintain the level of consistency and success this program has achieved in recent years,” Covarrubias said. “At the same time, we must challenge ourselves to set ambitious goals that will help elevate the program to new heights.”
