UPDATE: A day after the storm, Lincoln begins cleaning up, removing fallen trees

UPDATE:

On Sunday, a Lincoln woman and her neighbor were removing fallen branches from a vehicle near 45th and M streets when a second tree limb fell on top of them, injuring both.

Lincoln police said the 69–year–old woman suffered life–threatening injuries.  She was taken to a nearby hospital where she remains in critical condition.

LPD said this is a good reminder to be extra careful after a snow storm hits.

“It is just maybe a cautionary tale that all of us could be a little more careful when doing that,” said Ofc. Angela Sands.  “Whether it is looking up to see if there are any that look loose or maybe calling a professional in.”

The woman’s neighbor, a 63–year old man, suffered a broken leg.

Neighbors said both people were pinned underneath a massive tree branch and Lincoln Fire and Rescue had to cut through it to rescue them.

Meanwhile, tree services such as Blue Ox have seen a spike in business, removing debris from fallen or damaged trees.

“We’ve done today is way more than what we normally do, ever since 7:30 this morning,” said Blue Ox employee Timothy Bailey.

Bailey said early snows like this happen every now and then.  He said the best way to try and prevent damage from fallen trees is to call a tree removal service in advance of a storm.  They’ll come out to see if anything needs to be cut to avoid situations like these.

“If it’s over something valuable like a house, your roof or your parking lot, you shouldn’t risk it because this is exactly what’s going to happen.”

As far as getting rid of tree limb, if it’s on your property, it’s your responsibility.  If it’s from a tree between the sidewalk and curb, the city can take care of it.

Residents may take tree debris at no charge to the following locations:

  • Arnold Heights Pool, 4000 N.W 46th St., west side of pool parking lot
  • Oak Lake Park, 1st and Cornhusker streets, east side of the mulch pile in the parking lot north of the radio-controlled car track
  • Peterson Park, Southwood Dr. and Hwy. 2, south side of the paved parking lot
  • Star City Shores, 4375 S. 33rd Court, east side of paved parking lot
  • University Place Park and Aquatic Center, 2000 N. 48th St., south side of ball field parking lot
  • Van Dorn Park, 9th and High streets, east side of parking lot
  • Woods Park, 32nd and “J” streets., south side of ball field parking lot

Lincoln is cleaning up today after Sunday’s snow storm.

During the storm, a Lincoln woman was critically injured in her front yard.

She was removing fallen branches form a vehicle near 45th and M streets when a second tree limb fell on top of her and a neighbor, injuring them both.

Lincoln police say the 69–year–old woman suffered life–threatening injuries. She was taken to a nearby hospital where she remains in critical condition on Monday.

Lincoln police spokeswoman Angela Sands says this is a good reminder to be extra careful after a snow storm hits.

“It is just maybe a cautionary tale that all of us could be a little more careful when doing that. Whether it is looking up to see if there are any that look loose or maybe calling a professional in.”

The other injured person, a 63–year old man, suffered a broken leg.

Neighbors say both people were pinned underneath a large tree branch. Lincoln Fire and Rescue had to cut through it to rescue them.

Many neighborhoods around Lincoln had fallen tree limbs decorating lawns and sidewalks.

Some of the limbs hit power lines. If you see one, be sure to let LES know.

“If the trees are in the power lines, definitely give us a call because then we will send out our crews and our vegetation management will come out and determine the best way to get those trees out of the lines, said Rachel Barth, Communications with LES.
