House passes abortion rights bill; Nebraska Rep. Mike Flood calls it ‘barbaric’

LINCOLN, Neb. (KLKN) – A bill that would restore abortion rights in many states passed 219-210 in the House on Friday.

It’s a proposal that Nebraska Rep. Mike Flood calls “barbaric.”

The bill would prevent abortion bans earlier than 24 weeks and allows exceptions after fetal viability if a provider determines the mother is at risk, the Associated Press reported.

This legislation comes after the Supreme Court’s landmark decision to overturn Roe v. Wade.  It is the second time this bill has made it out of the House and into the Senate.

It is unlikely the bill, which lacks support in the split Senate, will come into law, according to the AP.

Republicans have contested the bill, including Flood, who called the bill “abortion-on-demand extremism” in a press release.  He said this bill would eliminate the state’s regulation of abortion.

“Nancy Pelosi and House Democrats are working to eliminate decades of commonsense restrictions that protect the health and safety of women, minors, and unborn children,” Flood said in a press release.

Flood is calling on his opponent in last month’s special election, Democratic State Sen. Patty Pansing Brooks, to let voters know how she would’ve voted on the matter.

“My opponent owes 1st Congressional District voters the truth about her position on this barbaric bill,” he said.

Flood beat out Pansing Brooks in the election to fill the seat left vacant by former Rep. Jeff Fortenberry, who was convicted of lying to federal investigators.

They will compete once again for the seat in November.
