Lincoln, Lancaster County officials look to fill over 100 vacant positions

LINCOLN, Neb. (KLKN) – City and county officials announced Thursday that they will be holding a career fair with hopes to fill over 100 vacant positions.

Barb McIntyre, Lincoln-Lancaster County’s human resources director, told Channel 8 that vacant positions span diverse roles.

These roles include recreation leaders and assistants, StarTran bus operators, public health nurses, county correctional officers, juvenile detention officers, police trainees, civil engineers and heavy equipment operators.

The human resources department will hold a career fair to fill those positions from 3 to 7 p.m. on Sept. 29 at the Auld Pavilion near 27th and South Streets.

Representatives from 11 city and county departments will be available during the fair to answer questions and help prospective employees fill out their applications.

In August, StarTran routes and service times were reduced as a result of the worker shortage.

September marks the beginning of a three-month $55,000 hiring initiative as a response to the service changes, according to the Lincoln Transportation and Utilities Department.

“It takes a diverse, talented and dedicated team to support the needs of our vibrant community,” Mayor Leirion Gaylor Baird said in a written statement. “From the specialists whose care supports our elder residents, to the public health nurses who provide wellness clinics for children and families, to the bus drivers who conduct the vital service of connecting residents to their jobs and schools – the opportunities to deliver meaningful services to our neighbors are plentiful.”
