City receives $400,000 federal grant for Safe Streets Lincoln

LINCOLN, Neb. (KLKN) – Mayor Leirion Gaylor Baird announced on Tuesday that Lincoln received a $400,000 federal grant to move forward with the Safe Streets Lincoln.

The initiative, outlined by the mayor during the State of the City address in October, aims to eliminate fatal crashes and reduce serious crashes by 60% by 2045.

“We think it’s a goal that we can accomplish, but it’s not going to be without effort and a lot of help and collaboration across the city, both city departments and the community itself,” said Liz Elliott, director of the Lincoln Transportation and Utilities Department.

To receive the federal grant, the city had to contribute $100,000 of its own to the Safe Streets plan.

The grant the city received is only to create the master plan; none of the money will go toward implementing it.

To apply for more grants, the city needs to complete the master plan.
