LINCOLN, Neb. (KLKN) – Police are looking for the person who pointed a laser at a helicopter near the Columbus Municipal Airport on Thursday.

Officers were sent to an area near 10th Avenue and 23rd Street after a LifeNet helicopter crew reported being “intentionally” flashed with a green laser as it approached the airport.

Airport manager Ross Niedbalski said pointing a laser is dangerous and can cause injury to a person’s eyes.

The Federal Aviation Administration says lasers can also “incapacitate” pilots.

“If you’re caught, you’re going to be prosecuted to the fullest offense,” Niedbalski said in a press release.

People who violate FAA regulations by shining a laser at an aircraft could face civil penalties of up to $11,000 per violation, according to the release.

An investigation is ongoing, and anyone with information is asked to call Columbus Police at 402-564-3201.
