Man arrested in fatal crash north of Grand Island, sheriff’s office says

LINCOLN, Neb. (KLKN) – A man has been accused of driving under the influence in a fatal crash north of Grand Island last week, the Hall County Sheriff’s Office says.

Around 5:30 p.m. on April 6, a Ford Explorer was heading east on White Cloud Road when it crossed Highway 281 and struck a northbound Chevy Impala.

The sheriff’s office said the driver of the Ford, 62-year-old Gary Williams, did not yield when crossing Highway 281.

A passenger in the Chevy, 59-year-old Darren Findley from St. Libory, was pronounced dead at the scene of the crash.

The Chevy’s driver and two other passengers were taken to a Grand Island hospital with “serious injuries,” the sheriff’s office says.  An infant in the Chevy was unharmed.

At the time of the crash, deputies suspected that Williams was under the influence of alcohol.

The sheriff’s office said a DUI investigation was conducted before Williams was taken to a hospital to be treated for injuries that were not life-threatening.

On Wednesday, Howard County deputies found Williams and took him into custody.  He was then lodged in the Hall County Jail.

He was arrested on suspicion of motor vehicle homicide (DUI), three counts of DUI resulting in serious bodily injury, DUI with a blood alcohol level over 0.15%, and violating a stop sign.
