Protesters in Lincoln demand justice for 22-month-old boy who died

LINCOLN, Neb. (KLKN) – A group of people gathered outside the Lancaster County Courthouse in Lincoln late Wednesday afternoon.

They were calling for justice for a 22-month-old boy who police say died as a result of child abuse.

Family members, friends and community members chanted “Justice for Junior” and “Stop Child Abuse!”

Almost one month ago, two people were arrested in connection with the death of Rudy Requejo Jr.

Police say he was killed as a result from child abuse by 32-year-old Joshua Tackett. They also say Rudy’s mom, Britany Cook, was complicit in the death.

Both of them are in jail awaiting their hearing.

The boy’s father, Rudy Requejo Sr., was at the protest. Wednesday would have been his son’s second birthday.

“And I really just hope that he gets the justice that he’s owed,” he said. “I’m trusting in the justice system here in Lincoln, that they’ll do what they’re supposed to and don’t allow these monsters to ever touch the streets.”

Both Tackett and Cook are expected to be in court Thursday.
