Ukrainian nationals can now obtain a state ID in Nebraska
LINCOLN, Neb. (KLKN)- The Nebraska Department of Motor Vehicles announced Monday that Ukrainian nationals can now apply for state identification.
Legislative Bill 138 – which was signed by Gov. Jim Pillen earlier this month – allows people with a parolee immigration status to obtain driver’s licenses and other IDs.
Rhonda Lahm, the DMV’s director, said the legislation allows displaced Ukrainians to seek new opportunities across the state.
“Being able to be mobile is going to be really important to them, being able to achieve their goals of taking care of their family and working,” she said.
Lahm said people without state-issued IDs are restricted in everyday life.
“Just everyday transactions, perhaps with getting groceries, paying bills, getting admission into certain places require identification and medical facilities, medical treatment,” she said. “So, you know, it opens a door for them that is currently not there.”
Ukrainian nationals seeking an ID can locate the nearest DMV or visit the department’s website.
