Over 40 cyclists stop in Lincoln on cross-country trip raising disability awareness
LINCOLN, Neb. (KLKN) – Over 40 cyclists stopped in Lincoln on Wednesday for a dinner and dance honoring people with disabilities.
Local volunteers cheered them on as they arrived at the Dollar General on West O Street.
The cyclists are part of Journey of Hope, a cross-country trek that spreads awareness for people with disabilities.
They are on a mission to celebrate and make friends with people who have disabilities.
The Arc of Lincoln and the Lincoln Star City Lions Club hosted the dinner and dance.
“This is the highlight of most of our individuals’ year,” said Jennifer Stuhmer, executive director of the Arc. “They ask me in January about when Journey of Hope is happening. They know it’s the second Wednesday of every year the cyclists come into town, and they have it on their calendars for next year already.”
The dance was free for people with disabilities and their families, and dinner was offered at a low cost.
The Arc works to protect the rights of people with intellectual and developmental disabilities.
It is hosting a fundraiser on July 28 at the Saltdogs game.
