LINCOLN, Neb. (KLKN)- The Nebraska Homeowner Assistance Fund’s application portal has closed, but residents are still encouraged to apply before the funds run dry.

The fund helps prevent mortgage delinquencies, defaults, foreclosures and displacement for homeowners impacted by the COVID-19 pandemic.

In June, the portal – where homeowners could apply for assistance – closed.  But officials said homeowners can still join a waitlist to receive funds.

Nebraska Investment Finance Authority’s Robin Ambroz said the goal is to help as many people as possible.

“When we got to the point where it looked like, you know, that we were getting down to remaining funds, we thought the best thing to do is to close the application portal, so we could work through those applications, but yet still keep taking names,” she said.

Once all of the funds have been used, Ambroz said homeowners on the waitlist will be notified, but they will still connect residents to resources.

“We will continue to link people to those resources, so that they can, you know, work with the housing counselor on whatever they may need to work on,” she said.
