Overcrowded animal shelters bracing for the worst as student loan payments resume

LINCOLN, Neb. (KLKN) — Already overcrowded animal shelters across the U.S. are preparing for another wave of pets, with student loan payments set to resume in October.
Shelter Animals Count says inflation has already forced owners to give up their beloved companions, and now 40 million Americans will have another significant payment every month.
Executive Director Stephanie Filer said, “For the owners, their pets, and the shelter system that’s already stretched beyond capacity, it’s urgent for people to look at their budgets, create plans, and reach out to shelters now to help connect them with resources. The hope is that planning ahead will allow them to keep their pets at home and out of shelters.”
Shelter Animals Count provided a list of resources that could help families in this situation, including some local options.
Lincoln Animal Ambassadors offers a low cost spay/neuter program, along with an income-based pet food bank.
Capital Humane Society’s Pawsitive Impact Program can help struggling owners with preventative veterinary care as well as food and pet supplies.
