LINCOLN, Neb. (KLKN) – The Nebraska Game and Parks Commission is investigating the death of three trumpeter swans in the Panhandle.

On Wednesday, Conservation Officer Josh Widhelm said the swans were found shot to death near Highway 29 and River Road, north of Scottsbluff.

The trumpeter swan is a “nongame species listed on the second tier of Nebraska’s at-risk wildlife,” officials said.

The swan is North America’s largest species of waterfowl, with an 8-foot wingspan.

People with information are asked to call the Wildlife Crimestoppers hotline at 800-742-7627.

Game and Parks said anyone with information that leads to prosecution of the crime may be eligible for a reward.
