‘Your Wallet’: Lincoln small businesses rely on holiday shopping revenue

LINCOLN, Neb. (KLKN) — The holidays are the most crucial time of year for many small businesses.

Data show that up to 65% of small business revenue comes during the holiday season.

“It gets them started and gets them jump-started into the new year,” said Bob Hallstrom, the Nebraska director of the National Federation of Independent Business.

Hallstrom said that holiday input is important for all types of small businesses in Nebraska — those who sell clothes, toys and also food.

Among them is the White or Wheat Sandwich Shoppe in east Lincoln, which just got a new start under new ownership.

“The holidays are an extremely important part of, not only our business, but small businesses around the area,” owner Seth Meranda said. “It’s a great opportunity for families to come out and enjoy what Lincoln has to offer.”

The Nebraska NFIB said supporting small businesses also supports the community.

“When you look at your small businesses on main street, they are your local friends, folks that you go to church with,” Hallstrom said. “They plow money back into the economy; they provide funding for the schools and the kids.”

Meranda echoed that sentiment.

“We’re all part of the same community,” he said. “We employ the same Lincoln people; we serve the same Lincoln people. It’s a great way for every one of us just work together.”

The NFIB encourages you keep your dollar local while shopping, not only during the holidays but year-round.
