Fog possible early, becoming cloudy Wednesday

Temperatures have fallen overnight, and with southern winds transporting a bit of moisture in yesterday, some fog has developed early Wednesday morning.

A Dense Fog Advisory is currently in effect for much of eastern Nebraska through 10 a.m. Wednesday. Visibility could drop below a 1/4 mile in the locations shaded in gray below. Watch for some slick spots on raised surfaces as well.

Fog Advisory

Other than some patchy areas of dense fog early, temperatures will be hovering in the low to upper 20s for those prime-time bussing hours. Only a couple more days before holiday break for some of the kids, and a few more warmer mornings to close out the work week as well.

Bus Stop Forecast

Cloud cover will increase by the later morning hours, likely to keep us from our streak of 50s we were watching for. But then we’re right back on track into the holiday weekend.

Dma Today High

While we’re watching for more 50s in December, the count is currently at eight days. We’ve seen eight days in December get above 50, and we’d only need about 5 days or more to make it into the top-5 warmest Decembers on record for Lincoln.

In saying that, at this time of the year last year it was a different story. Heading into the end of the work week, we got about 1.5″ of new snow on December 22nd. That made all the difference in temperatures, too. Highs that day never got above zero.

What We Are Watching

Clouds on Wednesday will not mean rain, but the rest of the week into the weekend we’ll have better chances. And warm enough for rain through this period, too – including the winter solstice on Thursday!

The best chance for widespread rain looks likely on Christmas Eve. That will carry over into Monday as we transition to see the backside of a system (meaning colder air and possibly some flakes mixing in by Tuesday).

Precip Chances

But until then, our next small chance is Thursday. Not putting the “winter” in winter solstice this year. Most short-term models have the moisture missing us to the south Thursday, but there’s a small possibility that some makes it into southeast Nebraska by the evening. This will not amount to much, if anything.

I’d rather take the rain at this time of the year for travel purposes, but apologies to anyone wishing for a white Christmas in eastern Nebraska.
