City of Lincoln announces where to recycle Christmas trees, lights

LINCOLN, Neb. (KLKN) – The City of Lincoln announced on Thursday drop-off sites where people can recycle Christmas trees and lights.

Lincolnites can drop off trees from Monday through Jan. 15 at the following locations:

• Ballard Park, 3901 North 66th St.
• Holmes Lake Park, South 70th and Normal streets, parking lot west of north softball field
• Oak Lake Park, three blocks south of Cornhusker on North First Street
• Tierra Park, South 29th Street and Tierra Drive
• Seng Park at University Place, North 50th and Garland streets
• Woods Park, South 31st and J Streets, southeast corner of the parking lot

Officials ask that people remove all decorations, tinsel, lights, skirts, disposal bags and stands from the trees.

Boy Scout Troop 8 also provides a free tree pickup service on Dec. 26, 30 and 31, and Jan. 1, 6, 7 and 13.

The 11th annual Recycle Holiday Lights Drive started Thursday and runs until Jan. 10.

A portion of funds raised from extracted copper will go to benefit the Eastridge Elementary PTO, Lincoln Firefighters Operation Warm and the Lincoln Public Schools Science Focus Program Booster Club.

Lights can be dropped off at the following locations:

• Eastridge Elementary School parking lot, 6245 L St. – southwest side of the building near the playground
• Lincoln Children’s Zoo overflow parking lot, 2847 A St. – across “A” Street south of the zoo
• Lincoln Fire and Rescue Stations – for locations, visit lincoln.ne.gov/City/Departments/Fire/Stations

Officials said that boxes, brown paper sacks, plastic bags, ornaments, artificial trees and household trash are not permitted.

Lights that are attached to garlands or wreaths will only be accepted at the Eastridge Elementary parking lot.
