Light snow across Nebraska likely through Thursday, then cold again
Temperatures only get warmer throughout the morning and into the afternoon on Wednesday, for our warmest day in quite a while. Temperatures were about 10 to 30 degrees warmer starting out early Wednesday morning, but with a little wind, wind chills were still about 5-10 below zero.
We’ll start with mostly sunny conditions today and highs around the lower 20s; then temperatures drop off the rest of this week.
Cloud cover will fill in across the state Wednesday afternoon, with some light snow showers starting up in the Panhandle. Minor snow showers are possible mainly in north Nebraska through Wednesday night, although areas on or just north of I-80 may see some flurries out of this.
Most will see under half an inch, but some select locations could see up to an inch across northeast and north-central Nebraska.
More widespread snow is likely on Thursday, starting in northwest Nebraska Thursday morning. Snow will spread to northeast and central Nebraska by the afternoon, coming for Lincoln around noon, if not a bit after.
Below is a map of the total snow forecast from Wednesday and Thursday. Recent model trends have taken more snow farther northeast, with snow wrapping up sooner. In knowing that, most of the state will see about 1-2″ from this. Higher snow amounts for those to the north that see snow on Wednesday, too.
Wind gusts will be picking up in eastern Nebraska as the snow is coming to an end Thursday evening, with gusts around 25-35 mph out of the north and northwest causing some areas of drifting/blowing snow.
Cold air then returns, feeling it by Friday and Saturday. Morning wind chills again will fall to about 20 to 25 below for Friday morning, 30 to 40 below for Saturday morning.
A Wind Chill Advisory was issued early Wednesday morning for most of Nebraska starting 6 p.m. Thursday until noon Friday.
A Wind Chill Watch is now in place for Friday evening into Saturday morning, as wind chills drop as low as -40° during that period.
We do get a lot warmer as soon as Sunday. Next week, temperatures will be a lot closer to average for this time of year, in the middle 30s.
